September 2017

The name is Love, Geoff Love

 On the first weekend of September Todmorden pays a special tribute to a hidden treasure, Geoff Love. If you have not heard of this gentleman you are sure to have heard of his work.

Born in Todmorden on 4th September 1917, Love went on to become a musical director, arranger and composer, involved in creating instrumentals of some of the most recognised TV and films tunes in history, including music from James Bond. Love’s prolific career garnered an astonishing collection of platinum, fifteen gold and thirteen silver discs, and a special trophy for selling in excess of 2½ million records.

Some of Geoff Love’s work includes;

  • Writing for several recording labels including Philips, Polydor and Polygram before finally settling at EMI.
  • He arranged Laurie London’s gospel song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”.
  • Love provided the accompaniment and arrangements on record, and in concert, for many popular artists such as Judy Garland, Frankie Vaughan, Shirley Bassey, Des O’Connor and Ken Dodd to name but a few.
  • Big Bond Movie Themes (1975) has since become one of Love’s most sought after MFP albums.
  • In the early 1980s, Love was the co-founder (with Bill Starling) of the Young Person’s Concert Foundation.
